And here are all the Biloxi Trip logs that I can find. These all start on the first day of the trip. There's journal and pictures for each of the years.

I want to start by wishing everyone a very very Happy New Year, and to thank you for your support, friendship, and time. I am very grateful.

I'm not a fan of the New Year's Resolution, as I think if I'm going to resolve something or promise something, it really doesn't matter what day of the year it is. *laughs* But I am hoping that this new year will be good for everyone, and there are a few things that seem to be coming together for me in the coming year, and I shall do my best to make them work out.

Home Again

It was snowing just two days ago, and it was kind of crazy to see the tornadoes going through the very same places we were just two days before that. It's been a very busy week.

Quite the change from 80's, sunshine, and calm seas, indeed. But it's beautiful here in Colorado with the snow on the cherry, crabapple, and plum trees. The new green of the aspens contrasts beautifully with the wet and snow, and it's nice to be where it's cold and dry again instead of sticky and humid.

The long drive through Texas put us through three different climates, and we got to see a lot of small towns along US 287, but now I'm glad I'm home planting tomato seeds indoors while the spinach, lettuce, and radishes enjoy the moisture from the white stuff.

I had a small accident yesterday. Stepped on a floor sub-board that wasn't fastened down, it flipped, and I went down a good four feet to the mud under the house. My left leg stayed up on the floor, the right knee hit a joist, slid down, and then my foot hit the ground. Took me a few minutes to get up, and when I did, I worked another two hours. *laughs* So I know nothing is torn apart or broken in it, and then it got a little too stiff for me to keep going.

So... uhm... haven't been writing as often here. I apologize for the delays. We're now heading for home, but I can fill in.

The filling in from Wednesday... )

Jet isn't sixteen, so he isn't old enough, really, to be allowed on the work sites. The liability insurance of the Mission that dictated this rule. We knew that, and knew that really they couldn't cover anything if Jet was actually hurt.

Our original plan was to just take Jet to the site and see what we could see, and it turned out that everyone there really knew what kinds of jobs were safe for Jet, and what really wasn't safe for him. Still, as his mother, I admit to having qualms at times. So Jet was a good excuse for me to not kill myself working and take the time to actually enjoy a few things that we've never tried while down here!

Still, Jet was patient with me, and I got to spend the morning on the site, nailing on the tar paper for the roof.

I got up early on Friday, not so much because of breakfast, it turned out, but more so that I would have the time to pack everything before we left for the work site. Since the work site was 30 minutes west of Biloxi, in the direction of New Orleans, the whole group decided to pack all the cars up with Stuff, and head out to the City directly from the work site. We were only going to shower when we got to the hotel.

I managed to get breakfast as well. *laughs*

Busy busy day.... and a trip into the city to see Bob!! )

On Thursday, I was tired, sore, and managed to turn off my alarm instead of setting it, so by the time I was up, breakfast AND lunch had been put away already. Luckily, I found some banana bread in the fridge, and John was gracious enough to give me half a sandwich for my lunch. When other folks found out that I hadn't packed a lunch I soon had grapes and chips and carrots as well. It was very cool to know that everyone wanted to take care of me.

It turned out to be a very busy day, and I ended up not writing a journal entry for it until I was in New Orleans, but there were a few things that I really remembered well.

One was that I got comfortable enough with the grinding tool to take it up to very, very high places. )

The rain is pouring down and the wind whips through the trees making them roar louder than the train that goes through every few hours. Lightening cracks the sky to let the thunder roll through and it seems like the beginning of a bad novel. It is a very stormy night, though not all that dark as all the light off the casinos bounces off the clouds.

It has been a very busy day.

Usually they call Monday "Stand-around Monday" as the coordinators work with the group leaders on figuring out what projects they want to do and can do and what they have that needs to be done. But we pretty much got our project, and they started out by saying that it was handed over from the American Red Cross, and that a number organizations and groups had looked over this project and hadn't gotten anything done on it. They wanted us to try it, so we went to look.

We really liked what we saw. )

Packing

Setting up to leave tomorrow morning for Mississippi. I always love spelling that state name. *laughs*

There's four inches of snow on the ground and more is coming down, the whole concept of 60° F during the day seems ludicrous, and my more pessimistic nature can't help but think it'll be raining the whole week.

So I'm packing accordingly. I'll probably wear what I have to to stand out in the church parking lot while waiting for the vans to the airport, but that'll probably be heavier than anything I'll need there. My eyes feel heavy and my throat's a little scratchy, but John's been fighting a sinus infection all week, and hopefully I'm just going to hold it at this level for the next week. I've done that before.

Last night four folks all came down with the stomach bug all at once, and the folks that had come down with it yesterday all stayed in as well, so everyone was wiped out and our crew was down six folks. So all the skilled guys had to juggle people to cover all three jobs we had going. And the folks that were left did a lot of work cleaning up the facility we'd stayed in. That turned out to be very useful when the jobs were done and we had to get all packed to head out to New Orleans.

[Posted the next day as the Internet went down at the place we were staying,]

We actually finished Melody's house, today, or at least the project that the Catholic diocese wanted us to finish on the house. She really could have used a new roof, but we weren't supposed to do that. So we didn't. We did have half a dozen go to her house today to finish the very last of the fascia installment and paint her front porch and a few bits of fascia that really looked a lot better for the new coat of paint. The first day the manager had said that we were not to touch the fascia on the eaves, at all; but he changed his mind on the third day of the project and told us that we were supposed to do the extra work.

I suspect, somehow that it was after seeing the quality of the work we were able to do.

What we did and what we moved onto, the other projects, and the restaurant we went to to celebrate. )

There's nothing quite like the sensation of the whole extension ladder bouncing while one is over ten feet in the air, and having the wind pick up and go stiff enough to make the whole ladder feel like it's shifting. Plus having the odd knowledge that if I actually dropped the paint bucket it would have a very long way to fall after I'd released the hook from the rungs.

More high-up work, nearly getting done, and going to The Shed. )
