Welcome to my journal. I'm putting this at the top so folks can find things easily. There's so many years worth of stuff on this journal that it's not that easy to find things. I started out just journaling, but then got into writing fiction as well.

The complete list of my stories and a few old adventures as I can index them... )

And here are all the Biloxi Trip logs that I can find. These all start on the first day of the trip. There's journal and pictures for each of the years.

Home Again

It was snowing just two days ago, and it was kind of crazy to see the tornadoes going through the very same places we were just two days before that. It's been a very busy week.

Quite the change from 80's, sunshine, and calm seas, indeed. But it's beautiful here in Colorado with the snow on the cherry, crabapple, and plum trees. The new green of the aspens contrasts beautifully with the wet and snow, and it's nice to be where it's cold and dry again instead of sticky and humid.

The long drive through Texas put us through three different climates, and we got to see a lot of small towns along US 287, but now I'm glad I'm home planting tomato seeds indoors while the spinach, lettuce, and radishes enjoy the moisture from the white stuff.

Details including a map! )

I had a small accident yesterday. Stepped on a floor sub-board that wasn't fastened down, it flipped, and I went down a good four feet to the mud under the house. My left leg stayed up on the floor, the right knee hit a joist, slid down, and then my foot hit the ground. Took me a few minutes to get up, and when I did, I worked another two hours. *laughs* So I know nothing is torn apart or broken in it, and then it got a little too stiff for me to keep going.

So... uhm... haven't been writing as often here. I apologize for the delays. We're now heading for home, but I can fill in.

The filling in from Wednesday... )

Jet isn't sixteen, so he isn't old enough, really, to be allowed on the work sites. The liability insurance of the Mission that dictated this rule. We knew that, and knew that really they couldn't cover anything if Jet was actually hurt.

Our original plan was to just take Jet to the site and see what we could see, and it turned out that everyone there really knew what kinds of jobs were safe for Jet, and what really wasn't safe for him. Still, as his mother, I admit to having qualms at times. So Jet was a good excuse for me to not kill myself working and take the time to actually enjoy a few things that we've never tried while down here!

Still, Jet was patient with me, and I got to spend the morning on the site, nailing on the tar paper for the roof.

This year has been very different than previous years. The main reason has been because this year's Biloxi trip was the same week as Jet's Spring Break. We knew about that fact, so had planned on doing a road trip with Jet instead of having his grandparents come to stay with him. Plans we hadn't known were going to be as appropriate as they ended up being. Part of the reason for that included Jet asking plaintively, last year, if he could come with us.

On top of that, the NCAA was having the Final Four in New Orleans on the ending weekend of our trip, so it was impossible to find hotel rooms for that weekend. Instead, the group decided to stay in New Orleans for the first weekend instead of the weekend after working all week. So it was all upsidedown.

Our route was straight east on 70 to the middle of Kansas, then south on 35 until Dallas, and swapping to 45 to Houston to stay at Bob and Mei's. From there we headed east along the coastline to New Orleans, and then from there to Biloxi.

Of course, we had to do it the hard way and did 20 hours to Houston, and I never knew that any part of Texas was so green... )

Sunday was very good indeed. I got to go and do all the things I wanted to do and mostly got everything to work out well. Beignets, oysters at ACME oyster, and a ride through the 9th Ward to see more houses, and perhaps more significantly, more people than ever before. Yay! So, yes, I had fun.

It was clear and sunny but so cold I asked John to get my down coat out of the car, and I was very grateful for it. We met the Burkes in the elevator on our way out to Beignet Cafe, and they wanted to go to Mother's, so we changed our plans and waited for them in the lobby to get warmer clothing.

Fridays are nearly always the hardest day for me, in some ways.

Some of it is that I'm sore and tired, sleeping in an open room with 20 other women is always a little crazy, no matter how nice and accommodating the other ladies are, there are still snorers and early risers and sounds that just have to happen when we're all together like that. I'm usually really sore and tired and hurting by the last day, and I like working hard. And it's the day when we're all going to simply finish what we can and go.

That last gives everything a little more urgency as well as a little more sadness. So I get a little cranky about it, not bad cranky, but this year my right knee was having more stability problems than the previous years and it was pretty swollen and just hurt a lot. Unless, of course, I was working on something.

We had plenty to work on, too. *laughs*

The entire back wall got replaced today, so the back third of the house has, really, been replaced with completely new construction. When the walls were in enough to support our weight, the roof crew went to work and shingled the whole back roof, which was twice the size of the front roof and were nearly done by lunch time.

We learn, and we get faster. *laughs* Can you imagine having a professional roofing crew coming in and removing an old roof and replacing it completely in just four days? The crew here also managed to get all the outside walls up and solid, and we have all the interior walls completed with a floor plan we came up with on Tuesday. It's pretty cool.

Today started with sleet, rain, and a good stiff wind. It made John so happy he was dancing on the way to the car to the work site. *laughs*

Not everyone else was quite as happy.

I haven't been up to writing in a lot of detail, lately. *laughs* The routine of the days will probably all be getting up early, having breakfast, making our lunch in the kitchen at the dorm, and then getting to the work site and working our asses off. Then we go back to the dorm, shower, and head out for dinner somewhere to help the local economy as we can.

By the time I get back from dinner (and, tonight, an extra beer run to make sure that when everyone hits the dorm after working that there *is* beer in the shiny new walk-in fridge) I'm not really up for much expressive stuff, but that doesn't really serve you who are following this journal all that well.

The return feels more routine this year, perhaps because it's so familiar now, the place, the stories the people, but I need, perhaps, to revisit a little of it to introduce all this to those who haven't seen the previous years' trips.

Some background for why we're doing what we're doing. )
