It's odd. I've now officially been not-quite-40 for a week.

I have a two-year-old, that most people have in their twenties, and am sharing parenting resources with a bunch of Gen-Xer's, which is actually a very cool thing. The trend really seems to be towards taking care of family and kids and not giving nearly as much of a damn about career and the money that gets made. The combination of fierce independence and a need to research everything has resulted in exactly what I like, lots of different books on the subject and a multitude of choices on paths to take with kid raising.

It's also nice having a work place where all the other people with young kids understand if I have Jet screaming with joy about getting the paint program to draw a streak across the screen during a telecommuting meeting.

The truly odd thing is that, after a series of better loans at lower percentages, we just paid off the house. Before we're forty. It's something my parents couldn't have thought to do. It's something I never really thought I'd do. But being DINKs with a penchant for squirreling away whatever we didn't need for so long has its payoffs. It just feels really weird.

Some part of me says that I can't be THAT old, yet. The rest of me shrugs and is glad of the experience.
