I know it's in the anime, that's where I got it from. I realized, going through the manga again, that it's not where that I could easily find it. I thought somewhere it mentioned that Yamamoto had started the Academy 2000 years ago... but forgot if it was during the fight or when Rukia/Renji and the new batch of students all come in. The wikipedia entries mention it as well, but of course that's not canon.
