Dreamed last night that [livejournal.com profile] incandescens came to visit me at a place purporting to be my daycare, though it was more like an elementary school which was in the process of having a school fair/ concert of some kind. [livejournal.com profile] incandescens joined in enthusiastically, but I couldn't quite make out what the kids and staff were calling her. Turns out it was 'Lily' or maybe 'Lilith'; she explained that this was her real name, but at boarding school there'd been too many girls with the name, so the staff decided she'd be called Genevieve for the duration.

[livejournal.com profile] incandescens may have been in my thoughts because she sent me a .pdf of Holmes pastiche which I have been reading on my phone (once I figured out how to save it to the phone). Now I understand why people read things on their phones: a well-behaved .pdf is much easier than a webpage or lj entry.

Fly in the ointment of my contentment is Rattus Recrudescens. While the weather was cold there was nothing to discern in my study or bathroom but the smell of ground coffee. (The mice in the basement walls had their brief moments of musk in that period, and then the smell cleared.) Whether it's warmer temps or some new victim, I now get ghostly reminders even through the three layers of plastic that covers the vents. Much worse, there's an appalling but different stink coming up the kitchen vent. Must give that one another week or ten days as well. Temps drop mid-week: we shall see what transpires after that.

Forgot to update yesterday. Oops.

Am in yet a third hotel. Back home, I am informed:
Main roof is all stripped, and half of front part re-shingled. That's the hard part with the dormer over the door. Most of one side of big room is cleared off. Siding is off front of house over big room; roofer said that part seemed in good shape.
Oh, and we have a large underground bee nest in the plant area under library window. They were not happy having shingles dropped in them.

I think that those are not bees, but rather the wasps that I saw the other day. Yellowjackets, probably, building underground nests for the larvae to overwinter in. Probably drove out the chipmunks, or the chirpmunks had moved out of those holes earlier.

The roofers and the yellow-jackets will just have to cope with each other.

I got some editing done, but no writing at this time. Too sleepy.

Made it to hotel breakfast, yay. Not enough sleep, boo.

So far, first hotel has been best hotel. Kitchenette suite for the win! This one is okay (beats out the second one overall, primarily by having breakfast be open till 10 and not 9:30), but the chair in front of the desk is way low, and it's kind of impossible to use a computer at it. How long do they think my torso is?? ...maybe they didn't set it up for humans.

Hotel breakfasts at mid- and upscale places have waffle-makers now, it seems. I can live with this. (This place only has scrambled eggs as the Egg Dish (well, and hard-boiled), though, and no cheese omelets, like Hotel 1 had for one day, and Hotel 2 had the day that I made it down there.)

...I am so judging hotels now. -_-

I am not near my other computer that has all the book data so I can't update that at the hotel. Tomorrow e come home, though.

The hot sun shines on the yellow locust leaves, the nights are cool but not cold enough to need heat. Evening comes early but I bicycle around with my brilliant lights front and back and feel safe. My long daycare days do not seem to leave me as crippled as before. I have two or three books I want to read. I get sleepy early and wake early, which is a blessing.

Yes, the washing machine at work died this afternoon and the person who handles these things has been deathly ill for over a week. But that's a problem for next week.

What are brains?

What is sleep?

Ugh.

Bank put a hold on my debit card because it didn't like me sending a present to someone in the UK, and didn't call me about it when I did it, but noooo, at EIGHT IN THE MORNING. (Did I mention that I haven't gotten to bed before 4 in the morning for... I don't know how long now?) I told them that really, I did want to do that, but I dunno if the thing will go through after all. *headdesk*

Spouse had Root Canal Part 1 today. Next week, Part 2. Then after that, Return of the Crown.

Finished That Edit Thing. Did a quickie for someone else on a first-chapter. (But their process is bogged down by going back to rewrite, so it's "put this in the file and don't look back! Run, run! Write like the wind! O;> ) Need to go read other things, too. Maybe in the hotel, I can get some writing done? Grind, grind, grind? Let's hope it's a comfy hotel.

It's YET ANOTHER hotel, as it happens. Not the awesome 2-room + bathroom apartment suite, with kitchenette, nor the second one which was... well, it was a hotel room and I didn't overheat (though I was kinda chilled) underneath the AC unit that spilled frigid air upon me. (Also, that part of the hotel is easily 25+ years old. I'm not too surprised the floor was uneven in spots.) But where was I? Ah, yes. Yet another one. I suspect it's the one-room-two-beds-one-desk arrangement. The one with kitchenettes was full.

It probably has a pool. I should pack a swimsuit. >_>

Or maybe I should just try to write. I need to figure out how someone is gonna spin a suggestion...

Or if I don't do CLB, I should try to get into the right frame of mind to get to a particular scene in DragonSmut(notmuchsmutyet) which has a turn of phrase that should be kind of hawt. *headdesks about this bit of fic that was supposed to be fluffy erotica and developed a plot* Never let the erotica develop a plot. PWP with a plot is direly uneven, it feels. BUT OH WELL, LET'S FINISH IT SOMEDAY.

...cross fingers for me, please.

Also got a good chunk of basic DW API stuff written over the weekend but bluh bluh testing, etc.

It's been a decade since I used amazon Japan, so I'd forgotten the sad lesson I learned there: if a company uses Fedex, run away as fast as possible. $30 US shipping for a $48 order, plus Fedex fee for border paperwork, and Customs or HST on top of that. And then Clear the Air sends me an email telling me how to use their bags, with this helpful addition, which in a spirit of spite I will share with everyone here:
If you do not want to wait for bags to be shipped to you, it is possible to make your own bags:

Go to PETCO and buy Clear the Air Cat Urine Odor Eliminator. It is in the cat section near the cat liter (sic). It is in a pink canister with a white cat on the front. Most PETCO stores carry this product. Buy at least three or four canisters. PETCO SKU # 1564420

Pour the contents of one canister into an old nylon or sock and tie it off. One 14 oz canister will make one bag that will cover approximately 75 square feet.
Hang bag in room to be deodorized and, they claim, odours will vanish within a few hours. This I very much doubt. Vanish for others; not for me.

Arranged an Xmas present for incandescens. BUT NO, THE ORDER COULD NOT BE COMPLETED FOR SOME OBSCURE REASON! *puts head down and cries*

Found postcards. Bought myself some purple jeans. They're not very Jeans-Fabricy but they're purple and they fit and they are very flattering. No, really, the inside pocket fabric says things like, "You rock!" and the like.

I have been out and about and fighting with websites and driving (when my eyes didn't want to focus long-distance 'cause I was reading my phone with my glasses down again, oops) and now I want to curl up and be antisocial.

Please forgive the antisocial. Plz buy a book.

Took out the trash and bashed my temple on the hatchback-lid because when I flipped it up... it didn't go up as far as I thought it would. It was dark OUTSIDE WHERE I WAS BECAUSE THERE IS NO ROOM IN MY SIDE OF THE GARAGE and I didn't see, and was distracted by blasted pine sap that had somehow gotten into one of my sandals while I was hauling the trashbag out to the car WHICH DID I MENTION IS OUTSIDE.

And I still have pine sap on my foot. What gets pine sap off?! Hand soap doesn't do it...

Spouse went for a crown on one of his teeth, but the dentist didn't like the x-rays and wants a root-canal specialist to look at it because he doesn't want his crown getting holes drilled in it for root canals subsequently.

I still need to go down and do my exercise ring on my watch.

I didn't get enough sleep but I did get a nap so that helped some. I'm still so tired.

Got a little editing done for friend.

As ever with Aaronovitch, my mind remembers details that zipped past while reading and that can't be found when I go back to look. I was sure there was a 20th century ghost that came apart as Peter was talking to it- a young chap, possibly in tennis flannels. He's not there. Ghost indeed.

But I also noticed a detail that may show up later: or again, may not. Who's poisoning foxes in the countryside? Truly just the displaced Londoners not fancying the local fauna? Because I'd have expected spoiler spoiler spoiler's foxes to have had something to say about it.

We are not social people. Well, okay, we’re selectively social. We have our groups of friends that we see now and then, but we don’t generally seek out new acquaintances. This will become important in a bit.

But we do like to cook. When looking for things to do on this trip, Stephanie found this cooking class that covers several Japanese dishes, and includes a main dish of actual Kobe beef. We figured, “Sounds cool!” and signed up.

Tried to do dental things but kid was having too much stress and the dentist was not taking the right tone to help the kid get through it, so... we rescheduled. For January. *sigh* Unless they have a cancellation. Well, we'll see.

I am direly tired of having to park outside. I want my garage back! *sob* But this requires our contractor guy to not have thrown his back/leg out on other stuff. (Like, for instance, getting almost all the siding back on the garage exterior.) I WANT TO NOT HAVE STICKY PINE CONES LANDING ON MY CAR! *sob* I want to be able to get in and out of the car outside of the weather and most of the climate!

I want my garage space back. *cry*

At least my headache went away when I was able to sleep on MY pillow in MY bed.

Have a headache -- probably from sleeping on hotel pillows.

But home. I like home. Home is good.

Very little sleep. (Had to get up early enough to go get hotel breakfast -- they stop serving at 9:30 ON THE DOT. They had cheese omelets which were decent but ugly-looking. I had some of those, orange juice, a couple slices of toast with apple jelly, and TEA. I did "room service" for kid, with bacon, a sausage patty, pancakes, one omelet, and orange juice.)

Have done nothing of use all day, except not fall asleep on anyone.

Spouse has not been sleeping well -- possibly a cold, possibly allergies -- and slept pretty much from when kid and I got back (around 10) till 2.

Lo, and that is all of interest today. And not much interest...

Oh, got some editing done for friend. Yay? I will get him to grok commas someday...

Open bags of ground coffee in the study and bathroom, essential oil peppermint on a paper towel over the vent in the kitchen. Thus do I exorcise Ratso, for today: since windows must be closed in this newly-arrived cold front.

Oddly, though neither furnace nor furnace fan was on, the peppermint smell spread through all the downstairs vents. These were all google solutions, BTW. Have no desire to try the 'cut up onions in a plastic container of water' one. I can smell a fragment of onion caught in the kitchen sink strainer, in my bedroom on the second floor at the other end of the house. Even the faint ghost of Ratso that comes through the plastic covered study vents is preferable to that.

On the whole a pretty good week. (I was going to say, "not a bad week", but it may actually qualify for good this time. I'm really bad at evaluating subjective stuff like that.)

I got my taxes done. Probably still some things missing, but since I only owed $117 over what I estimated back in April I'm not going to complain. Much. I'm still in a world of trouble over the lack of withholding on some of the pensions. That's going to bite me. Well, I'll put in an estimated payment for the quarter; that will help.

Naomi came home Sunday with the scooters, and we got one of them out of the van. (G and I got the other out last night with the help of my folding ramp.) And yesterday on the way home from dinner out we stopped at the bike shop in Bayview and ordered Colleen a (purple, of course) helmet.

Meanwhile, I have reconfirmed my dislike for the Mac user interface (Windows would be worse). The main reason is the inconsistent bindings for control, meta, and super (the "logo" key). It's almost tolerable with a Thinkpad keyboard and x2vnc, but the key bindings in Emacs are wonky and cut-and-paste doesn't work between the two systems.

Also, of course, Raven's handling of its external monitor is broken, and the desk isn't wide enough for it plus the monitor anyway. (It is wide enough for Cygnus to the left of the monitor, so I may end up doing that.) I have Raven on a tray table to the right of the monitor, which isn't ideal because, oh, yeah: my newest Thinkpad keyboard has started dropping keystrokes. Basically unusable at this point, and it's only a year old. Lenovo's QC has really tanked -- I miss IBM. And I can't find the box with my other keyboards :P Unlike the drill and the router, I know that one is in the garage because I saw it there. I blame the cats.

The cats are all doing okay. Even Bronx, who remains a bit fragile and isn't eating all that well.

We are making progress toward making the room over the garage into a usable living space. By not making large structural changes, and not making it an official ADU, we can probably save a lot.
