...with smoke from the fires to the west. Everything is hazy and it's harder to breath than normal. At night, since we have a good view of the mountains, being far enough east to actually see a good deal of the Front Range, we can actually see the glow in the hazy sky from the fires.

It's sobering.

We're way out on the plains, and it's not a threat to us. But every time I feel the wind blowing, and see the dry sky, it still makes me pray for the ones that are threatened. The immensity of it is only matched by how completely out of human control it is.

Mmm... it was surprising to see Croatia beat Italy, it's making that group very interesting to watch. Italy looked so tired. It was odd to see after the previous Cup, where Italy was one of the powerhouses.

Owen is even more stupendous now that he's 22, rather than the teen John and I saw four years ago. He was actually the cause for the pk that won England their match against Argentina.

This morning's US goalie, Brad Friedel, is a stud. Completely. He stopped a penalty kick and that's the first stop I've seen in the games, so far. Ah. It turns out to the be the first penalty save in regulation time in the World Cup for a decade. Holy moly. There has been mild controversy over which goalie plays for the US and Friedel wasn't the default goalie I'd heard about. Ah. Turns out that Keller was out for the game because of an elbow injury.

I'm really enjoying the first round matches in a way I haven't before. It's nice to record one a night, maybe catch one during the day while we're eating lunch (a replay, but still fun), and then really study the teams, their personalities and watch the astonishing differences in playing styles. All different, many still successful anyway. It's fun to see the utter diversity that can be represented by 11 men on the pitch.

The painters are here today. Yay! They're repainting the house yellow, but nicer and shinier (which will actually last longer as it's a harder finish) and the white trim will actually stay on since they're using primer. The original painter of this house didn't use primer, so lots of the paint's been peeling off. Ugh.
