liralen: Finch Painting (pensive_yoruichi)

I'm starting to really realize that a lot of what fanfic, for me, at least, is about is the fact that both anime and manga simply show you what is said and done. Unlike in textual fiction, where one can delve into the mental and emotional workings of the characters that are involved and know more of why they're motivated or impelled to do what they're doing.

Flashbacks serve some of that purpose in the visual representations, but lots of the actual emotional and mental content is left as an exercise for the reader. And with the internal models that all people build of other people, fanfic writers build those models from what they see and create involved and intricate and quite fascinating representations that they can then send spinning in their own directions. It's a fascinating exercise.

So fascinating that I was a complete fool and just signed up to do ten fics for June for the [profile] springkink  community. It's going to be quite a ride. *laughter* And I guess I just kind of decided to explode out from Bleach by working five other fandoms.

Of course, this little discourse does not explain, at all, why the heck I signed up for a Dresden Files (the books) piece, though having it be Murphy/Kincaid is really, truly the reason as I love those two tough characters immensely.

Mmm. I do look forward to reading those. :)

I agree with what you say about fanfic; exploration of what isn't in the anime/manga is an important part of it. Though I do also feel that it's important to keep it to some extent feeling like the original anime/manga. If it gets too far away, for me, it can stop being (series in question) and becomes something more original. Which isn't necessarily wrong, as it can still be great stuff. It just isn't the original series.

Oh, yes. Absolutely.

Making sure that that feeling of the original is very important and entirely undefinable as to exactly what makes it stick or stay. That is a big part of the challenge and fun as well.

It's definitely an art, the kind where the viewers are the real judges of "Oh, that's got it" or not.
