I'm with that book on New Rules of Lifting. It isn't just that the hamstring muscles need to be lengthened and strengthened (goodbye, stilettos!), but that the piriformis muscles grow too tight and contracted, and they also need to be stretched. When they are too tight, they cause problems with the sciatica nerve which feels like acute problems in the legs (poor circulation, pins and needles), but is a warning about spinal issues. There are some excellent yoga stretches which work on the piriformis, but they need to be undertaken slowly and for a gradually increasing length of time.
