Strange, isn't it? How life-affirming these disasters are because of how people pull together.
I mean, in Alberta there were a very, very few isolated examples of bad behaviour, too, but most people were more than happy to donate time, energy, food, supplies, money, extra furniture and clothing, a spare bedroom to sleep in until the place got fixed up enough to live in ... you name it. The volunteerism was unimaginable. And so was the forebearance and patience and consideration.
And no, it only helps to lessen the heartbreak and loss somewhat. Re-building takes years. It just helps to know that, in the moment of crisis, people helped shovel out the muck and bit their tongues about all the garbage.
It was just stuff, ultimately. We were so lucky there were so few casualties.
