So the weather has turned. 70-80 degree days with 40 degree nights and the bite is in the air. The trees are turning yellow and gold and russet, and the kids are climbing in them and shaking down the "dead leaves" as Jet says. He said he was doing the tree a favor as he climbed it this morning while we were waiting for the bus.

"We're early, Jet."

"What does early mean, Mom?"* Jet asked, and peered at the empty stop. "Hey! We're first!"

"That's what it means, Jet. Being early means that we're first."

"Oh."

Then, "Being early is like being late, right Mom?" asked Jet as we crossed the street.

"Kinda, but they're like opposites. Like tall and short are opposites but talk about the same thing."

"Oh." He trotted over to the tree and dropped his backpack. "I like being early, I can climb the tree!"

And up he swung himself on nothing but the strength of his arms and wedging one foot thoroughly in the crotch of the tree. I didn't try to catch him or hold him as I knew he'd be grumpy about that, but my little guy is now climbing trees well taller than him just 'cause the other kids do it too.

* Yes, that does mean that we've probably never been early to anything before, which is why Jet doesn't know the meaning of early... :-)

Second Day

The second time of sending Jet off on the bus was not nearly as monumental as the first. Plus, he not only had Chris, but he got Tanner as well to be with on the bus and going to school with on the bus. Macy and Tonya and Peter came as well to see Tanner off, and it was a party until the bus actually came. *grin* That was pretty fun. John has his OUR Center stint on Tuesday mornings, now, as that's when Jet's in school and the teacher has asked for volunteers to not start until mid-September or October, it's too distracting to have the parents in the classroom until after they've established their routine with the teacher.

Jet did ride the bus home yesterday afternoon. John stepped out the garage at 3:45 as the bus isn't really supposed to arrive until 3:55, but as he came out of the house, the bus drove by him. Oops. So he finished closing the garage door and then sprinted for the stop. Hee. Chris had his head out the window and waved at the running John. That was pretty funny for all involved.

The kids had a "go to everyone's house" evening last night and they played everywhere. Jet had some cheese pizza and bolted for the herd. We had the ravioli I'd bought from the Farmer's Market on Saturday. It was good.

The weather has broken and cooled off significantly from before. There's been rain every weekend for the last month! Which has been kind of cool. It's now definitely fall sliding into Winter, with a few bursts of Summer in unexpected times.

Jet's pre-school teachers, when he was just 2 and a half, mentioned that whenever someone fell he would stop whatever he was doing, run over to the person, comfort them and help them up again.

They said it was unusual for a boy to do.

Now, when Jet and the neighbor kids ride bikes together, they all crash periodically. They now ALL get off their bikes, go to the crashee and help them up, pick up the bike, and comfort them until they get back on the bike. They do this even when they're a fair distance from each other.

I talked with Jet later and he just said he likes doing it, and that he was sorry when he hadn't seen M. fall. So that was cool.

Jet and John had a good day together, yesterday, and John did a lot to try and conserve Jet's energy during the day. Jet got a good nap. They decided not to be crazy and go to Jet's pre-K Halloween party or to the party here at work. Instead, they stayed at home, played games, enjoyed Jet's little house in the basement.

But Jet really, really wanted to go Trick or Treating. I was uncertain. Fever. Sick...

John said, "But it's the ONLY time he'll get to do this all year."

And, yeah, Jet's going to be able to be sick a lot more often. Bad brain. Bad Brain!

Jet and I lit the pumpkins from when Granny Bell and Grandpa George came, and Jet delighted in their smiles. He also pushed down on the tops, quite firmly, to make sure they were 'closed'. He doesn't like cracks of light showing through the lids.

John bundled Jet up nicely after Jet ate a good, hot dinner, and Jet put on his plane and they went out. I sat at home, washed dishes, answered the door, gave out a lot of candy. Jet calls it "Selling candy to the Treaters!"

Dean and Mikayla came by about an hour later, and took their share, and Dean said that Jet was getting really tired, and they'd be by soon. And they were. Jet joined a bunch of kids and took candy from the bowls when they all got theirs. Then he shucked his coats and sweater and settled in the livingroom to "sort out his candy".

He sorted everything, lined them all up, like to like and proudly showed us each piece and asked us what they were. All 89 pieces. Pretty good rate of return on that trip. Yeesh. But he gently stacked everything on anything like it, and sorted it all out in a long line. I got a picture, but it's still in the camera. I'll have to flickr it. :-) It was pretty funny. Then he ate exactly three pieces and went to bed.

Jet was so happy he'd gotten to go trick o' treating, and, now, I'm glad that John made sure that Jet had such a good time. John was right. It was better to help him do what he'd love doing.

We gave him decongestant and ibuprofen and he slept all night for the first time in a while. I'm glad of that. I think part of my exhaustion and depression comes from Jet getting up four times a night for the last three or four nights. I slept better last night than I have for a while.
