While proofreading I came across a gem of a novel called From a Bench In Our Square. I think it's based in old New York, about the denizens of a particular square, and all the stories thereof. It gives me some of the same feel that I get off Daimon Runyon books, but without quite as thick a cant. Super-interesting characters, life stories, and only the mildest of plots.
