Glitter Boy

Over the weekend, Jet picked some gold glitter eyelash yarn and some buttercup yellow Homespun, called "Lemonade" if you go to the site to see it. He wanted a poncho out of them because I'd made Mikayla and Macy a poncho with lots of fringe (which Jet had helped cut). I'd had to argue him out of lavender, but he then insisted on yellow and gold, fuzzy, frizzy, fluffy, sparkling gold.

He wanted stripes of gold amid the yellow and he wanted the gold around his neck, so I did a square poncho that could be worn as a rectangle, just stripes of gold and yellow with gold where I cast off a bunch of stitches and then cast them back on again the next row.



I actually knit this with the skein of yarn on a kitchen scale and just knit up about the right amount of yarn for each band for it to come out even at the end. I ended up with a few yards of the Homespun and just about a foot of the glitter yarn left.

Square Stripe Poncho

3 oz gold lame eye lash yarn
6 3/8 oz Homespun lemonade (it says 6 oz on the label, but it turned out to be 6 3/8 oz)
Use size 10 1/2 knitting needles
Gauge: approximately 2 1/2 stitches per inch of length and about 4 rows per inch (I didn't actually measure)

st st = Stockinette stitch

CO 80 stitches with gold eyelash yarn. St st for 12 rows (~3/4 oz).
Change to yellow yarn, st st 17 rows. (a little less than 1 1/2 oz)
Gold: st st 4 rows (~1/4 oz) while carrying the yellow to the next section. Cut gold and tuck in ends.
Yellow: 20 rows. (a little more than 1 1/2 oz)
Gold: st st 7 rows.
Row 8: st st 37 stitches CO 16 stitches loosely st st last 37 stitches.
Row 9: st st 37 stitches, flip needles, cable cast on 16 stitches, flip needles and st st last 37. You should have 80 stitches again.
Finish 7 rows st st in gold.
Change to yellow. 20 rows st st.
Change to gold, carrying the yellow. St st 4 rows.
Yellow: 17 rows.
Gold: st st 12 rows. Bind off.

It ended up being one big square with plenty of room for his 22 inch head, even though, stitch-wise it was 12 inches? I'm not sure why bind offs and cast ons are so stretchy, but they are, and I have to remember that for sweaters and stuff. Still, it fits him perfectly. For all that he is five-years-old, he still fits size 4 clothing, almost perfectly.

I think that if I were going to pick the colors for a boy poncho, they'd be darker and without the fluff... like slate blues and greens. But he loves it and he wore it proudly to preschool today and all the girls were like, "OOoooooo!! That's so pretty!" and even his teachers said, "Great poncho, Jet!" So I'm very glad that he got what he wanted, and he loves it so much.
