Well, the threat's now a reality...

The entire sky to the north, from the mountains that bound the West all the way out to the horizon of the plains to the East is covered in smoke. Billows of it look like some earth-born thunderhead in dirty gray and brown that, wind-blown frays apart to cover the rest of the sky in a murky haze. Another co-worker is packing up all their irreplaceable, the development next to theirs has already been told to evacuate. The progression of it is like clockwork. The winds here are gusting up to 70 mph, which has made it night impossible to get tanker planes up there, and has made conditions really difficult for the fire fighters that are there. All the neighboring communities are sending fire teams up onto the mountain.

*hugs* thanks!

Being down on the plains has its advantages. The worst we get down here are grass fires, and they aren't really that much of a threat to anyone. The mountains have the trees, which are kindling dry after an eight week dry spell.

My thoughts are with you, having lived through the fires in British Columbia this summer. Hopefully the fire won't be too devastating to friends, family and members of your community and all your firefighters will come safely out of the woods when the fire is under control.

Many, many thanks for the sympathy and thoughts. I keep hoping, too.
