My gosh...

We just got a cable modem hookup. Wow.

It's SOOOOooooo fast. I'm just astonished.

Be warned it's addicting.

Always on, mostly fast.

You'll hate when you're on the road or visiting friends and are back down to 56KB.

Our old ISDN was on all the time, too. But, my, yes, it's FAST. *grin*

Now, if you want an entirely sybaritic online experience, shell out a bit of extra money and pick up an 802.11 base station and card for a laptop. Linksys has one for $60 - WiFi base station plus a 4-port switch, NAT and DHCP. Properly positioned, you get your Internet anywhere in the house.

That's been our solution for over three years (save I'm using an Apple Aiport) and It's helped us immensely since the Boy was born - being able to get quickly online where he is, rather than having to make accomodations in a dedicated computing space.

*laughter* Yes. It's been necessary for us, too.

We already have it, too. With our old ISDN, we had already hooked up the wireless, and yes, it's very, very useful when watching the bambino and still having to get something done. It's especially useful when an IDEA pops into the head and Jet's in the midst of something he HAS TO have me there to watch. *Grin*

Ah. Good, good. Didn't want to be teaching grandmother to suck eggs, as it were - but the way you commented on your cable-modem setup, I'd been wondering if you'd left yourself tethered.

*giggles lots*

Wow. What a cool analogy...

We live out in the country. Wheat fields, horse farms, and an airport all around us. About 15 miles from any reasonable city hub, a bare 5 miles from any new development, so it's taken a while for the cable companies to get modem capabilities out to us.

THAT's why it's such a new thing.

Though the throughput is about as fast as at work, now, and the Internet connections FASTER than work, which is pretty sad of work...
