Jet's First Cold
Oct. 12th, 2001 01:52 pmPoor Jet. He seems to have a head cold, likely caught from Alex and Haley. It's a good thing for his immune system to get a work out, but he's mildly miserable with a stuffy nose and a light fever. Tylenol and getting cuddled to sleep seem to really be helping. Lots of nursing and lots of liquids and while he's not totally happy, it seems to be helping. Oddly it seems that if he has me or John to complain to (even though he doesn't have any words, yet, the tone is unmistakable) he seems to relax a lot more easily and with a lot of cuddling he seems to be settling down pretty easily.
He and Haley were a chaotic duo today, for Joan. Jet produced a fine poopy diaper and while Joan was trying to change him, Haley wanted to 'help' and started to grab at poopy stuff while Jet decided he'd had enough time on his back for a normal change (Joan had had to pull him out of his diaper, his clothing, and everything to get him clean) so did his darndest and sat up naked and started trying to play with the bags Joan was sorting everything into. Poor Joan. Both Haley and Jet thought it was fun, though, and Joan was laughing when she described the scene to me.
Baby == Chaos
What fun.
I may well be coming down with the head cold, too, but it seems fairly benign. Just a little tiring and a little stuffiness, not too bad. I can still think and am taking full advantage of the time I have to concentrate. Foooom...

Baby=Chaos
Date: 2001-10-12 04:05 pm (UTC)When I'm in the middle of some sort of baby chaos, I always think, "Some day, I'll look back on this and laugh." Having a good sense of humor goes a long way towards keeping a mommy sane.
And good luck, heading into cold and flu season.
Re: Baby=Chaos
Date: 2001-10-15 11:27 am (UTC)It is very important to retain ones sense of humor. It really helps with the sanity bits, though outside folks looking in and seeing mommy laughing hysterically over a total blowout during a shopping trip while trying to change baby on the slippery slope of a car's backseat might not call her 'sane' per se...
Thank you for the luck. We've now had our first taste of Head Cold In A Nursing Baby. Luckily, we could just blow the whole weekend on figuring this out, and we seem to have figured out just how important it is to have Jet propped up while he's asleep. We ended up making a nest for him out of his old, infant car seat and a really fuzzy lap blanket, and tucking him in there with blankets. Having him mildly upright really helped with any breathing problems while he's sleeping, and he really got into snuggling into his nest and is even taking naps while the cold completely wipes him out. Whew. It was almost as important as just remembering that I could nap all day if I wanted to, with breaks to cuddle the baby.
I think the most astonishing thing about having kids is getting a completely new grip on What's Important. Especially some things like sleep and eats and having fun even with a cold...
