Actually, if you compare the price and feature set on the MacBook Pro to the price and feature set of the Yonah-based laptops announced last week at CES, you'll see that the MacBook Pro comes out pretty nicely.
Look for a Windows-based laptop that's 1" thick, weighs 5.6 lbs, and still has a built-in optical drive (let alone a DVD burner) and professional-level graphics accelleration. USB ports, Firewire, Bluetooth, 802.11g. Backlit keyboard. Adaptive screen brightness. And lets not forget a case that isn't plastic.
You'll be paying at least what the MacBook Pro costs.
Cool. I agree that no laptop in that capability range is "cheap". Just me being cheap. :) And drooling, for all that.
I have to also agree that when I finally do get my very own laptop (rather than just using whatever work gives me), it's likely to be one of these. Though not version one, I've got a little time for that...
Yeah. My PowerBook G4 15" will be two years old next month, and two years is my general "refresh" period. But even my buddy who works in Apple developing technical solutions for sales will tell you that rev A products are best avoided by all but the hardcore early adopters.
Granted, Apple knows they have to get this right. The slightest hitch will come back to haunt them.
But still... I think I'm going to wait until late spring or so...
I will not...

Modem. Oh, god, I can't think of the last time I fired my modem up.
PC Expresss. Hrm. Well, for me, the only PC Card I use is a Compact Flash adaptor (to save the batteries on my digital camera).
So, for me, this is ideal.
