I, being the usual self-centered type, searched for Liralen and got 2800 hits!?!?!!

aieee!! The Ghost of Usenet Posts Past is gonna haunt me now...

Google is doing the net a massive disservice. I mean, I think I've grown up an awful lot in the last 20 years, and I was hoping my old posts were pretty much dead and gone. It's already fairly common for prospective employers, for example, to do a web search on a candidate; now *this* stuff is going to factor in. Yuck.

Disservice? Hmm...naaaah.

1) Any prospective employer who searches out my comments on USENET is not an employer I would care to work for anyway. Given that if he's that anal about background, he'd probably be just as anal about in-work monitoring and such . . . and anyway, as long as it wouldn't affect how I did my work, what does it matter?

1a) (You can request that your old posts be removed, you know. Though it seems like a shame to me--it's abrogating the historical record of our time, which could be important to people long after we're all dead and gone.)

2) I like to think of my descendents (if I ever have any) being able to find out what their old ancestor was like by finding things I wrote. It's like my own little chunk of immortality.

Actually, I didn't know that. Deja made that claim back when, but they didn't actually honor it.

Mind, most of my old posts are fine, and anyway most people won't care. There are just a few where I was being really, really stupid that I'd kind of like to blot out. Don't know if I will, though; I don't really like editing history, either.

That was actually the one overriding sense that I got when I did some ego-tripping of my
own, back through the old posts... 'God, what a dork I was!' Hopefully I won't
be saying the same thing 10 years from now, but somehow I rather doubt it. *wry grin*

*laughter!*

Well, I'll keep hoping for myself, too.

Then again. I guess if someone did look at 2800 posts just to 'check me out' for employment, I'd be tempted to peer at them for wasting that much time on old Usenet posts. *giggles*
