Yesterday, a divorce trail began between Julie Vanleuvan and Frank R. Sandoval.
I wanted to bring it to your attention because Miss Vanleuvan was diagnosed with MS a year into the ten-year-old marriage. They had a daughter a year after the diagnosis. The divorce settlement is over parental visits for Miss Vanleuvan with her daughter and for something more than just the $200 a month Mr. Sandoval is paying for a Medicaid and Medical provided nursing home he commited Miss Vanleuvan to nearly a year ago.
From the opening statements by the lawyers, Mr. Sandoval is worth somewhere between $168,000 and $240,000 per year, and the two, as a married couple, were worth nearly half a million dollars, but he doesn't want to use any of it for Miss Vanleuvan's care, eventhough she can live in just an assisted living situation. She has no need for constant medical care. He wants to keep all their joint assets solely for himself and keep the status quo of only paying $200 a month ($2400 a year) for her care. He also wants sole custody of the daughter, Eva. He's kept Miss Vanleuvan from seeing her own daughter since the beginning of the year due to other probablems with Miss Vanleuvan's family.
What's possibly newsworthy is that the trial is being presided over by the Hon. Gwyneth Whalen, whose history as a Colorado judge worried enough people that folks from churches, ADAPT, and The Center for People with Disabilities all showed up to support Miss Vanleuvan's efforts to stay out of a nursing home that her sister-in-law described as being really sad, smelly, and filled with moans and groans.
The decision should be handed down this afternoon, at the Justice Center in Boulder in Courtroom I.
Even if you don't choose to run something about this, having *someone* at the decision point may be useful to see how the Hon. Whalen upholds Boulder values in all this.
I'm only involved through the First Congregational Church, UCC in Longmont, as our committee for Peace, Justics, and Whole Earth Ministry asked that church members attend the opening statements for the trial.

Though it does kind of feel like being at a safe distance anyway, as I'm not the poor newspaper reporter getting fired on from all directions. And I'm not actually involved in the case itself in any way... so it feels relatively safe.
Plus, folks that had gone just didn't seem to *think* that they could write to the local newspapers and tv stations about it. Email makes it so easy. :-)
I'm trying to wiggle out of the compliment, aren't I?
