liralen: Finch Painting (fire)

This is mostly for [livejournal.com profile] zangetsugirl and a bunch of folks whom I know are starting an RP. I know [livejournal.com profile] zangetsugirl writes Dresden Files fics, but I just remembered that quite a few folks on my flist were on Amber MUSH with Jim Butcher, and he basically used a lot of their characters in the Dresden Files books. Most of the White Court, Summer Court, and Winter Court and other groups were from that game. I know that, at least one player, if not more, was upset about finding their character in someone else's book without accreditation, too.

But it's kind of interesting to see where an RP can go.

And, yeah, it does amuse me far too much to be on the email list for the Dresden File RPG. *giggles*

Iiiiit's a small world aaaaafter all! *laughs*

Seriously, though, I'd have expected something of the sort. Authors throughout history have borrowed from whatever they can get their hands on, and it isn't always in the form of inspiration. These days, it's just a bit more obvious, what with the internet and all.

Yeah, easier to trace the linkages...

But, yup. Inspiration wherever you can get it! Yay!

A Thanlis a day helps you work, rest, and play . . . :)

Justine was my character, and Mab as well. Though for the latter I was pulling a lot from collective mythology, so not as purely mine.

I admit, I'm still a bit sulky that I never made it into any of the acknowledgments -- I got left out of the beta reader list in the first one, and the dedication that at one point was going to be mine on one of the early books ended up being to Jim's dad (not that parents aren't more important!)

I think you're sulkiness is for good reason. I'm sorry that happened, but it was bemusing to me to see that, too.

I think it was a combination of mildly hurt feelings, especially given that pretty much everyone else made it in and I was a beta reader from *way* back, and "dammit, that was pretty much my one chance to ever show up in someone's acknowledgments!"

I drifted out of touch with Jim years ago, so I don't think it will ever happen now, but still, every time Justine gets referred to in a new book, there's a little grumble of "jeez, use someone's character, you should give them a shoutout, man."

Definitely. Wow... Justine. Neat to now have a source. Thank you!! I really like her. *laughter*

It's cool that I can, at least, say thank you. *grin*

Remind me who he was playing back in the day on AmberMUSH?

You know, I actually have no idea. *laughter* I didn't play much, I just was surrounded by folks that did all the time on too. So the ideas spilled over, and then I read those books and I was like... hey... this is *familiar*. I think it was Chotii's outrage that really made me realize what exactly had gone on.

He played Bassor Thanlis and various other characters. I think... maybe Dalt at one point? I know he had a feature, but can't remember which one.

I... think Dalt? But I played more with Dirque's Dalt and I'm honestly not sure which feature he had.

He also played Sebastian.

I believe there's a character named Thanlis in Knights of the Old Republic, speaking of shout-outs. :)
