liralen: Finch Painting (painting)
[personal profile] liralen
[livejournal.com profile] stark_black was admiring some of my old ink paintings... and I felt like getting my hand back into it.

Okay, the pictures are a little fuzzy... but some of the painting's a little fuzzy too. Got a little impatient and did some painting on still wet areas when I probably should have just let it dry and go. But I really like doing a painting in a "breath" the way it's supposed to be done...

Young and Old BambooYoung and Dead

I like the second one better, I think, than the first... with the old, broken-off, dead bamboo next to the pliant young one.

So this is the complete fail... as I didn't do nearly anything right. *laughter* But I'll get it eventually and this'll be fun to compare against. Didn't get the pine bark right, got impatient with the bark, didn't do the rock/mountain/cliff right at *ALL* and I have to go back to Torry Pines to see how the darn pine actually grow from the cliffs to have even a decent idea as to the angle on the roots and trunk. But.. it was a passing fancy and I had a little ink left. *grin*

The Fail

The first two are lovely, and the last one's leaves/needles are minding me of some stuff I took pictures of yesterday. (Grass and I think some baby pines coming up through the mulch of the playground, like a miniature forest.) So I don't think you get to call it "complete fail." O:>

Scans and cafepress prints, next? Coffee cups? O:D

Oooo... Neat those reminded you of that! Definitely a bit of a win, then. Okay... not a *complete* fail.

*giggles* Hm... scans... maybe! Coffee cups... though I can just paint leaves and bamboo directly on ceramics... but it would be easier if it could be mass produced.

You are a talented woman. I like the second one best, but I like the third one too. It's right that nearly everything is 'wrong' because it's just wrong that the pine should have survived in that place. The gawkiness fits perfectly.

Have you ever been to the lava fields at the top of the McKensie pass? Talk about an impossible place for anything to grow. And yet, here and there, something does. The trees that survive have that same awkward look.

Ooooo... excellent point. I haven't actually seen the lava fields... I'll have to look the next time we're in the area... Neat!!

Thank you!! Coming from you that's really cool. XDD

I keep learning. Did some orchids today... the color gradation on the brush has always been kind of hard for me, but I'm having fun testing it a lot.

Ooh I love ink paintings, and yours are beautiful! I see what you mean about the pine not really working, but your bamboos are really gorgeous, especially the second one. Love the composition!

Well, I can't do manga art very well at all. *laughter* This is so totally different it's pretty funny. And I get jealous for other reasons. *grin*

But I'm very glad that you found these lovely! Thank you!

Thank you, so much! I've been working the composition of the groupings of the leaves in my head for a while, and it was good to finally get it out.

Wow. I'm really, really happy that you loved it, as it means a lot given all the gorgeous art you do. *happy sigh*

Thank you!! I'm so glad you found that beautiful. Wow.

*grin* For what it's worth, when we had to do Chinese calligraphy and ink painting in school I discovered I was really, really bad at it. It wasn't lack of practice either, I took calligraphy lessons for a couple of years. Just never got the hang of brushes. :p

Okay, that is really interesting. *giggles*

Wow... talk about just doing or being good at different things!!

I'm getting to be better a brush calligraphy, with lots of practice of characters I can't even really read. It's funny 'cause I can compose lots of characters with pretty good proportions and still have no clue what they mean. That poetry site you gave me is really, really cool... I should do a few of those as my practice, then I'd actually know what I was writing.

I seem to be pretty good at this and at watercolor, both of which my artist friend at work told me are "totally out of control art forms" and I was like... buh, thinking of all the control of the brush I have to have in both instances. But even I don't exactly know how it's going to turn out until it's done.

*laughter*

Well... here's my name (http://www.flickr.com/photos/liralenli/1579071352/in/set-72157600101327917/), but I wrote it a very long while ago. I haven't had more recent pictures of my calligraphy practice as I pretty much just throw it away, mostly. *giggles*

It's still just straight characters, no script, yet.
