Doom and Color DOOM!

One of the coolest things about living out on the high plains is that one can see the weather coming for miles.
One of the scariest things about living out on the high plains it that one can really see the weather just coming for miles. Especially when the thunderstorm clouds fill the sky all the way from the mountains to the border of Kansas and I'm just on my way out to ride my bike to the grocery store. And the wind was blowing. There are reasons there's a guy by the road selling bricks attached to link chain labeled "Boulder Wind Chimes" around here.
Sadly, I managed to get home before the rains hit. It would have been cooler to ride in the rain, though I probably would not have cared for the thunder and lightning.
I painted yesterday and met the doom that is color. I hate color. I suck at color. I still have to try it, though. Silly me.
First I did a little black and white to get my courage up...

And I'd studied a few of the more classical cherry blossom paintings that I really liked. Most painting lesson books don't have what I really wanted to paint, but I found a beautiful book on classical paintings and poetry and was inspired enough to do this:

I got brave enough to try this after a comment by

And then I really had to laugh at myself for doing this. Yes, really CHUNKY sparrows. *laughs and laughs* There was just too much water on the brush, but I liked how the cherry blossoms turned out with color instead of lines, they're much, much easier.

Date: 2008-07-25 11:18 pm (UTC)We only got a little bit of rain Wednesday and Thursday, but we needed it. I'm just glad the storm didn't come much closer than it did. There were tornados and lots of sever weather just a tiny bit south of here, between Austin and San Antonio.
BTW, the paintings are lovely, ESPECIALLY the chunky sparrows and cherry blossoms.

Date: 2008-07-26 12:18 am (UTC)The colored flowers are beautiful. And the sparrows may be plump but they look really alive - the two colors you chose are just right! (are those traditional sparrow colors? dunno about birds.)

Date: 2008-07-26 04:14 am (UTC)So, yeah... it adds a lot of charm and is out-of-control in a way that I can't resist. *laughs*
The sparrows had orange and brown for the bodies, black for the wings and eyes and beaks, and white and diluted black ink for the bellys and bodies. They're pretty much brown dabbed with black and white belly birds. Next time you eat outside a sparrow will probably show up. *grins*

Date: 2008-07-26 03:02 am (UTC)I love the colors and your sparrow anatomy may be a little askew, but really, fat sparrows are awfully cute and the French like them better that way anyway (good eating).

Date: 2008-07-26 04:17 am (UTC)I'm glad you like the colors... I'll have to try some more. And, yeah... askew. That is a marvelous word! *grin*
Mmm.. plump.
A birder told me, this evening, that sparrows, in early spring look really, really fat because they have all their feathers fluffed out to keep warm. So spring sparrows are *supposed* to be fat and they get more sleek in the summer. I laughed so hard.

Date: 2008-07-26 03:32 pm (UTC)So, thank you, very much!! They're calming to do, and it's even more fun when other people like 'em, too. I'm still learning, so it's fun to put up even my mistakes so I can see what I've learned from 'em.
