I've watched The Watchmen, Kill Bill 2, read five books of Fullmetal Alchemist, and spent nearly two days playing Onimusha 2 before I realized that the latter is something I usually do doing depressive cycles, when my brain won't let go of something in the background and some part of me is desperately trying to overlay something else on top. Violence and adrenaline or endorphine-charged usually works best, and that worried me a little...

Until I woke up Wednesday morning with a really bad headache and it just got worse... okay, I was a little hung-over from the Mom's Night Out on St. Paddy's day and I never do THAT either; but Jet had had a cold in the previous week where he got a big fever and headache for a day and then just coughed and hacked his way through the rest of the next week. I was so relieved that it was just a cold that I couldn't believe it. MUCH better just feeling physically down from a cold than the depressive cycles.

I celebrated by watching four episodes of Haibane Renmei and Spirited Away and reading old issues of Scientific American. I guess it wasn't depression, it's just that I'm in full-speed input mode and knitting and biking on the exercise bike as I watch and read.

Watchman was cutting edge when it first came out way back when. It's now... not that, but also not generic either. I had one mom go Oh oh!! I love superhero movies! And Watchman is so pretty!! I tried to dissuade her from it and warn her, but... *shrugs*

It still left me unsatisfied in many ways. It's pretty, it's plot twisty, it has some pretty remarkable characters; but it's always odd for me to sympathize with Rorschach the most, who is probably the most sociopathic and yet...

and yet...

It was good. It wasn't something I loved any more than the original graphic novel was. I can appreciate the artistry of it, but not the heart of it.

I loved Kill Bill 2 all over again. I liked it better than the first movie, but I think it's because of all the Chinese/Hong Kong movie homages. *laughs* I can't say it isn't as over-the-top as the first (especially after seeing all the Mythbuster episodes dealing with various bits of the movie. I can't say it isn't as gory as the first, as it clearly is good and graphic in many instances. But maybe it was just more... believable for me. The stories in it gripped me harder than the vengeance blood-fest of the first.

But maybe it's because I now know, gut deep, what it means to have been pregnant and to be a mom.

Dunno, though.

Ran through books 11-16 of Fullmetal Alchemist and I really love how it's all developing. The foolish prince that turns into something else, how Roy Mustang got his ambitions and motivations, all the things the boys learn from adults that let them know everything there is to know; and more depths to the stories of the doctors and Scar. I like that Edward is amazed by what the adults will tell them as kids. I like that a lot. I also love how Edward never, ever takes "impossible" as the final answer. *grins*

Haibane Renmei and Spirited Away were good comfort.

Onimusha 2 has been fun to play. The motion is driving me nuts though, as it's all relative to the character himself, rather than to me, and that always makes me a little grumpy. I see how it's related to Devil May Cry in how the play, the fights, and the art works. But I like the story better and how the characters interact. I love that last bit, especially the giving of presents that result in other presents that go to other people and so on until they give me stuff I really like. It's really funny but I get all amused and embarrassed when I give pretty things to the girl character.

It doesn't hurt that Kaneshiro Takeshi is way cute. *laughs*

The two Kill Bills really are quite different, aren't they? I adore the complete insanity of her fight with the Crazy 88 in KB1, but her talk -- and fight -- with Bill at the end of KB2 is just as awesome in an entirely different way.

Yes!!

Exactly. They are very very different movies, and I loved that about them, that Tarentino knew well enough to let the second one be so different from the first.

And, yeah, her whole talk with Bill just amazed me, especially Bill's analogy about Superman being different from all the other superheros because, for him, the disguise, the fake was Clark Kent... and what a damning indictment of humanity that was. *laughs*

Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying Haibane Renmei and FMA and other stuff. :)

Rorschach has always been the character I identified with the most in Watchmen. It's a terrible world, in that story, everyone faces despair and horror and nihilism, and Rorschach's response was to build himself his own moral compass out of the materials he had at hand, in his own damaged psyche, and live his life by it. I really respected him for keeping on trying to save the world in his own way.

It is!! And, yeah, I think that's the core of why I liked Rorschach so much as well. He actually has a moral sense compared to nearly everyone else, that it was so narrow and strict was because of his environment...

Yes. I am glad I'm enjoying the others as well.

I love that Edward doesn't take "impossible" as the final answer, either, in FMA. Fun stuff.

I wasn't blown away by the movie... and I think what disappointed me the most was that it *could* have been as mind blowing as the book, but in a different way.

We watched Spirited Away the other night, too! But N didn't like it much even though he'd seen it before...

It is very shonen of him. *laughs* Definitely fun stuff.

I agree... the book, when I read it was mindblowing. The movie was... almost tedious.

Jet's reading the Spirited Away manga, and he loves it. *laughs* So we're going to probably watch the movie again, too; but, yeah, he has some of the same objection, i.e. that we'd seen it already.

Ah, I'm glad you're feeling better (it's just a little cold rather than depression). *makes you some yummy soup*

I had to leap and whoop at the mention of Onimusha 2. I... didn't think anybody played that anymore (at least, anybody I know). I love the gift exchanges too, it's little bits like that that make it fun! (I admit to a bit of a crush on Gogandantess.) I favoured Magoichi, since he's sorta awesome. I even ficced it for a while, but the fandom is nonexistent.

There is supposedly an Onimusha movie in the works (lol, for how long has this rumour been going around?) but supposedly Kaneshiro Takeshi would be in it... enough reason for me to keep scouring the net for more info.

Anyways, yes, Nova and Onimusha 2 in common, in the same day? May I hug you in common-interest glee? ♥

OOooo... *eats soup happily*

Yeah, it's much better to just be sick than depressed.

*giggles so much at the leap and whoop*!! No one plays it anymore, it's an OLD game, but I love old games I can get for $3 at Game Stop (http://www.gamestop.com) and they don't even charge for shipping. Yeesh...

I love Magoichi, too! *laughs* But I could easily believe that the fandom is nonexistent, it's so old... though there have been two versions out since, they haven't been quite as popular; but yeah, there are still rumors of the live action movie in 2011.

*hugs you happily* It's always good to have common-interest glee!! hee.

Yeah, I don't care how old a game is. If it's fun, then I'll play.

I think Oni3 was more popular, though I never got through that. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was pretty fun, but there was nothing in the fandom about it. No buzzing, no excitement... nothing.

Magoichi was awesome. I love smart guys, and he was suave and liked books and... has that touchy-feely moment with Jubei where he confesses that he's really a good guy and all that jazz.

*waits patiently for the movie but doesn't hold her breath*

The FMA anime is good, but the FMA manga is really good. Lovely stuff!

And yes, Spirited Away is excellent comfort.

Yes, the manga is really, really good. I'm about to catch up completely to where the American translations run out, so I'll have to settle for watching the anime for a while. *laughs* I've heard that their different enough stories that I'm kind of looking forward to that as well.

I do love Spirited Away. And the whole fact that there is the promise of, perhaps, some more someday at the end still fills me with delight...

... and the faintest urge to write what happens five years later when he does come looking for her again. Or something. *laughs*

I liked Kill Bill 2 best too. Though really they were both too bloody for me. Not on my rewatch list. ;)

I loved Spirited Away, though Princess Mononoke was almost as good. But Howl's Moving Castle will always be my favorite of Miyazaki's.

How do you find the art in FMA? I loved the animation of the series, but was never thrilled with the manga art. I think Kubo spoiled me. XD

I do love Howl's Moving Castle, but the ending jarred a bit. But then I loved the book so much (http://www.amazon.com/Howls-Moving-Castle-Diana-Wynne/dp/0061478784/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238012147&sr=8-1) that I was kind of grumpy about where they deviated.

Still, it's beautiful, and I really love how Miyazaki rendered the Castle. Wow.

KT would spoil anyone... but I rather like the FM manga. It's not as edgy as Bleach or as beautiful; but it still is good about telling the story visually. The action sequences are sometimes a little muddled, but they're not even nearly as horrible as Saiyuki's action sequences. *laughs* Given that I happily zoomed through Saiyuki, FM is much, much better.

Hmmm... Ok I'll put FMA back on my manga list. It should be a good read especially if they really are going to do another anime. :D
