Drabble: Living

Kuchiki-taichou and Ukitake-taichou flanked Ichigo as he walked soberly after the small white casket, the other remaining captains followed, all in sharply cut black suits.

Ichigo did fine until he had to pick up the shovel. He frowned at tears dripping down his face, but dug in deep. The thunk of the dirt hitting the cover was loud.

"I hate this. Why did she have to die?"

"You have it the wrong way around, Kurosaki-kun." Ukitake added his shovel of dirt.

Byakuya's frowned at his shovelful. "She would never have lived so well without the friends she had to protect."

*Squees at the sheer awesomeness* Even though this is a sad piece, it was exactly the pick-me-up I needed today. Damn exams.

I was very curious what you would do with this prompt, and I can't say that I'm disappointed. I am assuming this is Rukia, and I have to agree with Byakuya here. She wouldn't have really lived if the others had died.

I think it's a good assumption, and I think the confluence of characters you requested made it make sense that they'd gather over Rukia, each with their own relationship with her.
