He banged his head on my desk while trying to maneuver around to climb up my legs into my lap and he looked very mournful and held his head and said sadly, "Owww."

It was! He also gave me this wry grin when I picked him up and hugged him and was amazed that he'd said a word that was relevant to the context. I think I was sending oddly mixed signals of gladness about the word usage while being aware that he'd been mildly hurt...
