But I remember someone speaking about playing DND with other folks online with some kind of linking software that allowed maps and little markers for the characters as well as dice rolls and stuff. Can you please point me at the software or linking thingy or skype-like thing for that? Please?

I use MapTool, which allows for fairly complex macros and frameworks. OpenRPG (linked above) is also good. There are a number of commercial packages as well.
