It's been strange. My boss has decided to step sideways into a technical position, and give up all the management stuff to two other people. It's not bad. It's just change, so everything's a little uncertain and people are trying to figure out how to step into the void that'd being left. Boss Bill was very opinionated, very sharp and very much into all the technical aspects of what's going on with the whole system. He'll still be in on all the meetings, he just won't be leading them anymore, and no one can quite imagine what that'll be like.

But he'll get a rest, and he really needs it. He was great a grasping problems and driving them to a solution that was complete; but as a result of that, he was also really bad about letting certain problems go even if he gave over responsibility for it to someone else. So it's going to be just really interesting to see how that changes.

My present projects and problems involved a two hour meeting yesterday where we finally got things resolved in a way that completely confused me. But we got it all straightened out this morning, so I've been cleaning up after it all. That's been okay. I should be able to take the afternoon off, after I'm done with all this, and we're having a meeting tomorrow morning to deal with something new that came up. But I did what I had to for that, and I'm tired, too.

Getting that done involved a bit more perl wrangling that went very well once I figured out how to use the defined() proc. I like that.

The management/technical tightrope is damn hard one to walk - even for those who have genuine skill in both areas. I've seen several very good people burn out when moved into management positions, and I've seen it myself when I've had to do site management. Good for Bob that he recognized it, and was able to move mack into a more technical position.

He's still working at the higher levels of stuff, and it'll be more a sprearhead position where he will be affecting what the rest of us do, but it *is* more technical. So that's cool. I'm just glad the company and our uberboss, i.e. Bill's boss and my present boss' boss figured out a good place for him.

I am glad, too, that he figured it out before he completely burned out. I think having an eighteen month old daughter helped him figure it out, too and also helped with the burn out. I cannot imagine working 10 hours days with a baby in the house...

"It's not bad. It's just change."

Thanks! I think I'm going to put that on my office wall.

Yay!

I'm also exploring the TK interfaces as we have a lot of TCL in-house, so it's kind of cool being able to give a unified front end look but with perl guts.
