Walt and Cathie made breakfast burritos the next morning, and it was a wonderful breakfast for people just filtering in as they were able. Poor Jet had a really hard time getting up, as he's not at all used to going to sleep that late, and he was in the last group to get in and get fed.

But he made it! And we all piled into cars and headed out to Maryhill to see an oddity that I had glimpsed from the highway across the Columbia many a time when we were headed East on a road trip, but we'd never explored up close.

Cut for pictures and many things.... )

In the mid-1800's one Sylvester marsh of Littleton, N.H. went to Congress to ask for access up Mt. Washington for a railroad, the congressmen gave him the access and added permission to build a railroad to the Moon as well. They felt that the two were pretty much equivalent.

Mr. Marsh showed them otherwise. The railroad opened on July 3, 1869 and operated continuously up until this last winter, when they closed it for the winter for the first time, ever. Business for them this summer hasn't been good, and the weather hasn't helped either.

So we thought we'd help them out. *laughs* Eventhough it didn't really shine at the top, but then it rarely does.

The whole set is now up on flickr.

There are a few that are pretty nice illustrations of what we had the most fun with, though...

We just hopped into the Passat and did a little three-day trip out to ride the Cumbres-Toltec Railroad and see the Colorado Gator Farm. Though, admittedly, the latter was chosen between that and the Sand Dunes and Jet wanted to see Gators.

There real reason we went out was to ride the train. It's a coal and steam powered train that goes from the plains in Altonito, Colorado up into the mountains and across them, through the Toltec river gorge and through the Cumbres mountains to Chama, New Mexico.

I set up a flickr set of some of the photos at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/liralenli/sets/72157601062732595/

Jet had pre-school today, so we went out and watched "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". The movie is MUCH tighter than the book, but it's choppy as it still didn't prioritize very well and followed a few too many things at once. I liked it, nonetheless.

We had lunch at Tuk Tuk Thai and it was good pineapple fried rice.

We hit Shuttles, Spindles, and Skeins on the way home and I picked up pot holder loops, miscellaneous seconds yarns, and a set of bamboo knitting needles (circular US 5) that were just too gorgeous to miss on. I used my gift certificate there, and it was glorious.

Once home, John biked while I went and got Jet and realized that one of Jet's teachers is a man. So I realized that one of the four had to be Manly. :-) So I made it out of one of the seconds yarns I had, which was a nice, stolid brown instead of the fairy ribbon for one, the cotton candy ribbon for the other, and the third that looks like a boa that had caught on fire. :-)

Jet and I made a potholder before the night was out and I used the pot holder to cook dinner. He loved that. Yay for pasta! I am realizing that part of my inability and disinterest in cooking much lately does stem from my work burnout, I think. I have too many variables tracking in my head, already, and I automatically balk at piling a few more onto my poor head, so I don't even contemplate doing the elaborate dishes I used to do. It's interesting to see my brain in action...

I did, however, spend the evening frantically knitting away, as I had two scarves to finish before tomorrow. Luckily, the boys were completely absorbed by John's birthday present, a big Lego freight train. Woo woooooo!!
